Report from the Kennett Area Park Authority
Regarding the Anson B. Nixon Park, January 2010
The Board of the Kennett Area Park Authority is grateful to serve the community by helping to administer the operation and maintenance of the Anson B. Nixon Park.
The Board is composed of the following Township residents – Deb Shenk, Jack Williams, Mike Petrillo and Borough residents Pam Carter, Richard Lyon, Prissy Roberts, Wendy Walker, Norris Wright.
Park programs and activities are managed by a volunteer group, The Friends of Nixon Park.
We operate 365 days a year with 2 part time workers.
The Kennett Area Park Authority is most appreciative of the support which is provided by the Kennett Township and the Borough of Kennett Square.
2009 Highlights include:
- the ribbon cutting for the new Activate Kennett Trail with 2.5 miles of marked trails to enhance a fitness initiative organized by the Kennett Area YMCA.
- A Community Garden with all 39 beds planted and maintained for the second year, providing community interaction and nourishing produce
- Second year of free concert partnership with Historic Kennett Square, WXPN and Friends of Nixon Park – parking assistance from the Longwood Rotary made the event run seamlessly, with over 400 estimated in attendance
- Installation of an additional trail for the Kennett Run so their course can accommodate the increasing number of runners in Spring 2010
- Cosmetic improvements of playground equipment provided by Longwood Rotary members
- Collapse of the septic field and the current evaluation of a potential solution with the possibility of tying into the Borough sewage line
- Participation in plans for an improved entrance to town with the Borough, the Kennett Area YMCA and the Bayard Taylor Library. Park elements could include restoration of the former waterworks buildings, boxing club improvements and the relocation of the Borough maintenance facilities.
